"Work schedule may be often overlooked and underutilized as a sign or warning for heart disease," said Mika Kivimaki, a professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London.
The length of time worked may not directly have a negative effect on health. According to experts, heart attack could have occurred because of the wrong lifestyle. People who overtime usually tend to eat foods that are unhealthy, inactive due to sitting too long to do his job, lack of sleep and more frequent stress.
"Someone who works too hard may be more likely to eat fast food, unhealthy snacks and is also inactive. Some of it is not a factor that takes a long time to get a heart attack," explained Stephen Kopecky, MD, a cardiologist and professor medicine at the Mayo Clinic.
However, the increased risk of heart disease in overtime workers are also affected by the type of their work. According to Kopecky, farmers and other outdoor workers work between 12 hours to 14 hours longer, but they tend to have longer life or longevity.
